Bounce: workshop update

Last Sunday, which also happened to be Mother’s Day, the Bounce workshop team rounded up the troops again for our second workshop series for this year. With much discussion, the team decided a consultation workshop was necessary to hear what our mentees have to say about the program and have their input in what they would like to see in our future workshops. Of course, it was not all talking throughout, we slipped in a couple of team activities to get everyone relaxed and allow their creative juices to flow. Starting off, teams were split into four and each team had to build a device that encases an egg and when dropped from head height, the egg must not break from the impact. As you see each team doing their trial and errors, it was fascinating to see how different each group problem solved their masterpieces and not to mention some friendly competition was also brewing in the air. After everyone successfully constructed an egg break-proof device, we moved on to an illustration activity where each person got the chance to share their favourite things.

The consultation was insightful and it gave the Bounce team ideas in what our future developments should be based on. Also, one of the hot topics was communication and how we can reach out to our mentors and mentees more efficiently. We all agreed, with the age of social network, a Facebook group will be set up for everyone that is involved with Bounce. This will be our online interactive platform for everyone to know what is happening within Bounce, issues anyone wants to raise and just general shout outs to the Bounce group. So to all Bounce members, watch your Facebook space and you may see a Bounce group popping up in your profile.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from C8

As we wind up for our first full year together, one can’t help but reflect.  We’ve had a great year at C8 Journey, with our Bounce refugee program going from strength to strength and spreading to new regions of Melbourne.  We have also, quietly in the background, been setting up a few new ventures, which we can’t wait to launch next year…stay tuned!

Below are some photos from the Bounce Christmas BBQ we enjoyed over the weekend – hope everyone is able to enjoy similar events with their friends and family over the festive period.  Have a happy holiday period everyone, we’ll see you in 2013!

Bounce photo workshop

Last weekend Bounce had their first Photography Workshop.  Another great day for all involved, the mentees were all so eager and took some fantastic shots.  Stay tuned (did someone say “exhibition”? ).  Have a look at some of the photos from the day – just great stuff!  We live in a great city, don’t we guys?  Thanks to the bounce team for another successful day.

C8 Bounce’s First Anniversary Celebration

Earlier this month we celebrated the first anniversary of Bounce, C8′s refugee mentoring program.  The program has become a great success, and we felt a little celebration was in order!  Thanks Bhavini Reddy for organising such a great event!  Also, a special thanks to Ferndara Photography who took these great shots!

Bounce mentee Zoo trip photos!

In mid September we took a group of mentees from the Bounce refugee mentoring program on an excursion to the Zoo! With a fine backdrop of both local and foreign fauna, the mentees and Bounce team members had a great time connecting and, as always, eating! It was the second meet-up of the month, after the earlier I.T. workshop.  Next up is a planned photography workshop…if you would like to get involved, remember you can contact us at sayhello@c8.org.au, tweet us @C8Journey, post to our facebook page - or even leave a comment below right here!

First Bounce I.T. workshop a great success

Recently we introduced some of the mentees from the C8 Bounce Refugee program to the power of the internet with an I.T. Workshop at RMIT . We spent time with each mentee, helping them master many of the free resources on the web.  The mentees were most interested in the online job resources available, browsing further education opportunities, visualising where they were in Melbourne with Google Maps (and finding their way around with pto.vic.gov.au), and discovering free online English language lessons.  It was a great time for the mentees to connect with Bounce and each other (we enjoyed some Malaysian food at QV afterwards)!

Thanks to everyone involved!

Bounce featured in Star Newspaper for Refugee Week

The Bounce program, partnered with AMES and the Refugee Council of Australia, was part of the refugee week launch on Monday 18th June 2012. The star newspaper (a local newspaper in the South-East region of Melbourne) wrote an article and also included a picture of some of the Bounce team members who were present on the day. Click here to view the article!

The launch was put on by the Refugee Council of Australia, who have done an incredible job in helping refugees settle and serving the community over the years. With more than 140 organisational and 500 individual members, the RCOA promotes the adoption of flexible, humane and practical policies towards refugees and asylum seekers through research, advocacy, policy analysis and community education.  With a slew of eye-opening statistics, CEO Paul Power enlightened us of the challenges ahead for millions of asylum seekers around the world, and his belief that Australia has a lot more to offer.  C8 and Bounce would love to give a big thank you to the Refugee Council Of Australia for giving us an opportunity to be part of the Launch of Refugee Week!

We helped launch the week by interviewing new Melbourne Heart recruit and former refugee Gol Gol Mebrahtu.  Gol Gol shared with us his story, and how he believes sport can play a major role in the integration of refugees to the local community.  Gol Gol also was receptive to the idea of mentoring for newly arrived refugees, and expressed his desire to help with our program in the future.  It was a great experience for all, most especially for our mentee Hussein who is a huge soccer fan.  Special thanks to Gol Gol for coming down before training and also the Melbourne Heart football club, who are A-league leaders in community work and engagement.

So, together with AMES and the Refugee Council of Australia, let us reflect on Henry Ford’s quote “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”  Let’s keep it going guys!

(Compassion Series) Inner space

Have you ever felt you don’t know where the last 6 months have gone?  You ask yourself “where did the time go?”, “where have I been racing around to?”…ploughing through work, being bombarded, exploding wardrobes, comfortable accommodation, mobile phones, iPads, night clubs, family events and weekends away – it all just seems like one big blur sometimes!

Have you ever felt like you just needed some space or time out?  Life without space can become chaotic and it is not only your own space that gets compromised.

Most often than not we as individuals are unable to personally allocate or locate space for ourselves and we unconsciously go treading into other peoples space often treating it with disrespect. Sometimes all we need to do is just be clean and de-clutter our lives to find the space.

We all need space to grow, just like in a Garden we plant trees and flowers a particular distance apart to prevent overlap, clutter and distress. Space encourages growth may it be for a plant or for us as human beings.

At our monthly meet-up in April we used the metaphor of a garden to represent your inner space, relating to an earlier compassion series where we spoke about intentions and planting seeds of personal intention. To enable your seed to grow in your garden, you will need to identify your fertilizers and Weeds.

Your fertilizers are positive actions or people who will uplift and nurture your growth. Your weeds or rubbish are things that are preventing you from growing. Take a pen and paper and by yourself or with a friend (always helps to have a co-gardener) Plant or locate your seeds of intention and identify your weeds and your fertilizers. For example my intention is to make more personal time for myself, a Weed for me would be my inability to say No when asked to do things or hang out.  A fertilizer would be to be more time managed. So from there my action plan would be learn to respect myself by saying No when I really cant do something and learn to find a gentle way of saying No. Secondly, perhaps get a diary or calendar to schedule my days and allocate downtime for myself.

It starts with your own inner space – taking the time even if its just 5 minutes a day to just breathe, take a break and stop, get off this conveyer belt we call life and just breathe. Start cultivating your inner garden, clean up any rubbish or dirt, pull out the weeds, identify what is good for you and what can be improved.

If we are able to create the space between ourselves and emotions/ reactions we can soon be what we call observers. Where we can observe our actions and responses and become more mindful and ultimately more accepting of where life may take us!

Our next Compassion series will be about protecting your Garden from external impacts.

Happy 1st birthday Bounce!

“Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies.”
– Kofi Annan

Today marks the first anniversary of Bounce.  The Bounce Program is representative of this statement and strives to support, empower young refugees, provide awareness of refugee youth issues and bring youth together from all walks of life.

With the project now in full-flight and expanding on the success of last year, The Bounce Program would like to thank the “Bounce Family” which includes the mentees, mentors, Bounce volunteers, AMES and those who have and continue to help and support us.
